Over the years, many things have become dishwasher safe. People put children’s and pet toys in them now, but some things would be ruined in a dishwasher. The high temperatures and the force of the water could cause some things to chip, warp, or become dull. Avoid putting these 10 things in the dishwasher:
- Wooden Items
Wooden items such as utensils, bowls, and cutting boards can’t stand up to the hot water and heat in the drying cycle. The finish will also be dulled over time. This even includes wooden knife handles. To preserve their shape and finish, hand-wash these items and let them air-dry.
- Crystal
In general, crystal is very delicate. The harshness of the heat used by the dishwasher could severely damage crystal pieces by chipping or cracking them. They will also lose their finish.
- Copper
Copper is strong enough not to chip or break, but the dishwasher could end up ruining the finish on copper pots, pans, and mule mugs.
- Insulated Mugs
These mugs will no longer do their job if put in the dishwasher. Water can get between the outer and inner layers, diminishing the insulating properties of the mug.
- Cast-Iron Skillets
These skillets take time to perfectly season correctly. Washing them in the dishwasher will remove the seasoning of the skillet.
- Items with Adhesives
Bottles or jars with labels adhered to them should not be put in the dishwasher. The hot water could peel those labels off, which could then clog up the dishwasher and cause some major issues. Either wash them by hand or take the labels off first.
- Vintage Dinnerware
Antique pieces are often rimmed with gold and have amazing patterns on them. Both of these delicate details can be ruined if these dishes or glasses are put into the dishwasher.
- Nonstick Pans
Unless the pan says it is dishwasher safe, it’s best to hand-wash it. Some nonstick pans can go through the dishwasher, but just be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions first.
- Soft Plastics
Soft plastics are subject to the high heat of the cleaning and drying cycles. This will warp them and they could become unusable.
- Graters, Peelers and Garlic Presses
Handwashing these items is the only way to ensure that every little piece of debris is removed from those tiny holes. In the dishwasher, the holes can become even more plugged with heat dried particles and impossible to clean.
