With the holidays coming up, more stress will be placed on the plumbing. While All Star Plumbing and Restoration responds to plumbing emergencies 24/7, it’s better to avoid plumbing problems than to have one occur during your holiday celebration. Here are some tips to avoid plumbing disasters during the next couple of months:
- Oil Disposal
Even more cooking than usual will be used during the holidays and it’s important to remember what can and can’t go down the drain. Oil, hot or cold, can cause serious issues. It should be drained into a disposable container and put in the garbage instead.
It’s tempting to scrape everything off of plates and into the garbage disposal, but certain leftovers shouldn’t be disposed of in this way. Turkey bones and potato skins, two food items regularly seen at Thanksgiving, can clog up the garbage disposal really quick. It might be a safer option to scrape plates off into the trash.
- Lack of Cleaning
Some foods put into the garbage disposal have grease and oil on them. Over time this can build up, creating clogs and emitting an unpleasant odor. Use cold water or ice to clean the garbage disposal and get rid of build-up. Simply turn on the water while the disposal is running. Surprisingly, hot water actually aids in grease build-up, so remember to use cold water instead.
- Toilet Maintenance
With guests visiting, the bathroom will see more use than normal. Have a plunger in the bathroom for small clogs. Also, it can be a good idea to check the toilet for leaks, cracks, or other issues before the holiday season starts. This way homeowners can be sure it is working properly and there’s less risk of a problem.
- Shower Drains
Again, with guests staying for the holidays, there will be more shower usage. That means more of a chance that hair can clog the drain. Clean the drain out before everyone arrives. Also, consider investing in a hair stopper for the drain. It will catch almost all of it and prevent any clogs from happening during the holidays.
Preventative measures are always better than having to make an emergency phone call. However, if a plumbing problem does arise, Call All Star Plumbing and Restoration.
